Decorating our Foyer

I've had so much fun with our foyer.  I can't believe I actually have a foyer and a staircase! I'm still working on decorating it. I've already changed it around multiple times trying to figure out what I like and don't like, but as of now this is what it looks like.

My husband's grandmother gave us this table.  I love the size and shape of it.  It really feels perfect for this space.  I love filling our home with pieces that have been passed down and have special meaning.

I'm still trying to decide how to refinish the table so it will coordinate better with the current woodwork throughout the farmhouse.  I'm thinking I will sand it down and stain it to match the staircase, but I may paint it white and give it a distressed look.  It's staying as is until I'm 100% sure what I want to do.  If you have a suggestion, please share it with me!

I've owned the lamp bases for a long time, but the two new shades I recently found at Lowe's give them a completely fresh and new look.  I finished styling the table with books, a glass vase, a framed photo (which I brought down from the bathroom, I found a different one to go in there!) and a little rustic carousel I found at TJ Maxx.  I'm not really sure what it is, but I loved it and had to have it!  I finished things off with a basket filled with a blanket and a couple of throw pillows.

The mirror was hanging in our previous master bedroom, and the ceiling light fixture is a recent DIY project my husband helped me with.  I will have to share the details of that project soon!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Antique TV Stand

My goal while decorating our farmhouse is to create the perfect blend of old and new.  I want to incorporate plenty of vintage inspired and antique items through out the house and decorate in a way that's simple and timeless.  Our living room really needed a nice solid antique piece to mix in with all of our newer furnishings, so this dresser seemed to be the perfect thing to add.

You may recognize it from Audrey's last room.

There was so much furniture that came in our new house that  the previous owners left. I pretty much loved it all and wanted to use it, so we were left with several extra dressers.

To whip it into shape I brought out my collection of paint samples.  It really is sad how many of these I have, this is only a few of them.  It takes me forever to pick out a paint color these days!  Anyway, they really are handy for small projects like this.

I began by choosing three shades of neutral paint and painting each drawer a different color.  Then I took the lighter color of the three and lightly brushed it over top of each painted drawer.  I then took a damp paper towel to lightly blend the colors together without completely getting rid of the brush strokes. For the lighter colored drawers I did the same thing except I went over them with the darker paint.

The last step was to give the dresser a distressed look by sanding the edges.  I finished everything off with a coat of clear furniture wax and some cute vintage inspired knobs I found at Lowe's.

As for styling it, there really isn't much going on yet.  At first I had our TV boxes in the floor underneath, but with all the cords and clutter it looked terrible, so I decided to just put them on top of the dresser. The tray underneath helps hide the power strip.  Not my favorite look, but it's working for now until I can think of something better.

I found this fun runner at TJ Maxx to add a little texture and warmth.  Every space needs that!

So, there's one corner in the living room done, now if I could just get around to the rest of it!  It will all come together one of these days.

Have a BLESSED day!

Farmhouse Bathroom Update!

In our farmhouse we have one bathroom upstairs that the 3 bedrooms on that level share.  We decided to stay in one of those bedrooms so we can be close to our kids at night while they are little.  The actual master bedroom is located on the main level.  Anyway, the upstairs bathroom is being shared by all of us right now, so I decided to spruce it up a little.  Audrey and I are thinking of making the current master bathroom into a girly bathroom just for us, but that project will have to wait a little while.  Even though this bathroom was dated, it was in great shape and offered tons of natural light. All it needed was a little fix up.

Here is what it looks like now after all my budget friendly updates.  The goal here was to spend as little as possible to make the space feel more up to date without doing any major renovating.  I think I finally achieved that.

I basically just painted EVERYTHING! Even the counter tops, sinks, and bathtub! I used one of those tub and tile refinishing kits to refinish the sinks and bathtub, and I slightly modified a tutorial I found on Pinterest to paint the counters.  I will go into more detail about how I did all that in a future post!

I decided to go ahead and switch out the light fixtures because there was just no saving the ones that were there, they were pretty rough looking.  So far I have only set out a few accessories like this vase that I found on antiquefarmhouse.com, a small framed photo of my children, and a glass vase filled with pine cones.

I scored a great deal on a couple of cute stools at Target a while back.  They were on clearance for only $14.99 each! At the time I had no idea what I would do with them, but now we are using one in here.  It's the perfect spot to hold our basket of towels.  I am planning to add some shelving and hooks on the walls but haven't got around to getting that done yet. I would also like to frame out the mirrors one day.

We removed the old shower doors and opted for a curtain instead. I found this fabulous shower curtain at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. I love the colors, texture, and the cute fringes at the bottom. It's exactly what I was looking for!

I chose a simple jute rug to ground the space and add a little texture to the floor.  I found this one at TJ Maxx.  The woven shade and towel basket also provide a little texture and warmth to the room.

I love how this room looks and feels now.  I feel like we were able to maintain the character of the home while making this space feel brighter, cleaner, fresher, and prettier!

Here is another look back at the before and {in progress} shots.

Update!

I'm finally back! It has been one crazy summer and I am so ready to get back to this little blog of mine.  So much has happened since my last post.  We have finally made the move to our farmhouse and it's definitely starting to feel like home.  There are still boxes everywhere and projects to be done, but that's okay because we are here and we can now take our time getting settled in.

One of my biggest concerns about moving to a new place was how well our kids would adjust to all the changes.  I have to say they have done amazing! They have been sleeping better here then they ever have before and they act as if we have been here forever.  Audrey is loving her new school and has already made several friends.  I thank God every day for blessing us with this beautiful place and making the transition so easy for them.

After we moved into the farmhouse, I had to do a few things to our previous home to get it ready to sell. I decided to re-paint most of the house to freshen it up along with a few other minor projects.  At first I was a little sad every time I thought about leaving the house we loved so much, but now that we are adjusting to life on the farm, our first house doesn't even feel like home anymore. It's funny how things work out.  My best friend is a realtor and she will be helping us sell our house.  She took some really awesome photos of the house from different view points so as soon as I get those I will share them!

I'll be posting later today about how a gave our lovely yellow bathroom a big makeover on a small budget! It doesn't even feel like the same space.  Here are a few before pictures of the room.

Have a BLESSED day!
